WINDGEATs - Torquay tree
STOP PRESS: We are now fairly certain that Robert WINGET at the top of this tree was born in UGBOROUGH - so it looks like the Torquay tree is actually a sub-branch of the UGBOROUGH tree. I'll be updating this information when I can get the time.
Torquay - where is it?

and Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland.
There were Windeatts in Tormoham (an earlier name for part of Torquay) as long ago as 1524 and a field beside the A380 is called Great Windeatts. The greatest concentration of present-day Windeatts is in the area of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham which could suggest that this is the origin of this rare locative surname (see the origins page).
Where did they go from Torquay?
Many of the people on this tree have stayed in the area, a few moved on north round the bay to Babbacombe. One branch moved to Exeter early in the nineteenth century and from there to London. Some branches were fishermen and moved on to Hull and Grimsby. Others went even further afield to Australia and New Zealand.Erstwhile Top of the Torquay tree
This is the erstwhile top of the tree showing Robert WINGET who married in Churston Ferrers in 1810. We are now pretty sure that he was born in Ugborough and was apprenticed to John Foale, a yeoman of Churston Ferrers in 1800. Churston Ferrers is a hamlet just west of Galmpton and is now part of Brixham.

while John is still living with his mother and sister in Galmpton, Churston Ferrers while Maria is living with her own mother and a son of four in Dawlish and working as a nurse, . Was this just a temporary separation for occupational reasons? Or had they permanently separated? They don't appear to have had any more children. Maria hit the headlines in 1856 where she was described as "a fat nurse" (see court report).

Ten years later little William is still at Manor Place and living with his grandma, Sarah DAVEY, and a Fanny SKINNER (who is probably related to the Mary SKINNER who signed his parents' marriage certificate). He is now working as a Groom.

Where are his parents?
This could be them living quite a distance away in the Cadbury area. John is recorded as a gardener which would mean he has had a change of occupation and his birthplace is given as Crediton rather than Galmpton. But possibly Crediton was a misinterpretation on the part of the enumerator? A possible link, however, is that a William Henry WINDEATT, married a Sarah Annie DISCOMBE in Kensington, London in 1872 and this might have been son, William, and the bride could have been a sister of the Samuel lodging with them below (but of course we can't know unless the marriage certificate is inspected.)

The two men made their marks but Jane and Susan signed. This Jane appears to be the daughter of the Robert above but it is strange that he signed his own marriage certificate but made a mark when his daughter married (unless, as sometimes happened, he practised hard for his own marriage but had forgotten how twenty-odd years later).
