Tree - just guesswork
- Ada Marian WINDEATT
- Emma WINDEATT (née WATLIN)
- Emma Marianne Meyer Windeatt
- Mary Ann WINDEATT (née FERGUSON)
- Philip Meyer Windeatt
- William Windeatt
From this we learn that William was the son of a John and an Ann WINDEATT and that he came to Launceston with his family when he was five years old - which, if he was 72 when he died in 1896, would make his birth date c. 1824 and his arrival in Tasmania about 1829 or 1830. It also fills in a lot of the detail about these family members. However we still do not know which John WINDEATT was the one who left Devonshire for Tasmania in 1829/30 nor the origin of the MEYER connection. And further doubt is cast on the possible Modbury origin of the family because the dates don't quite match and John WINDEATT apparently married an Ann not a Mary Ann (although she could have been Mary Ann but known as Annie like George's wife Mary Ann FERGUSON.)
This is a GUESSWORK tree which has been put together from a variety of records available in Tasmanian and IGI data. We think this tree is an offshoot of the Ugborough tree but this is not definite. There are some difficulties reconciling some of the data. If you know anything about this family please get in touch (e-mail below or leave a message on the Message Board). We really do need confirmation from the original records.
The John WINDEATT below came to Tasmania in 1831 with his wife and four children (information from a correspondent). He may have married again in 1834 to Ann Lane (as assumed here) or there may have been two John WINDEATTs.
You will probably need to scroll along to the right to see them all.
J. WINDEATT

*According to a GRIFFITHS family website, she was not a Maria Lane but a Maria Jane WINDEATT, born in 1821 and married to a Frederick Smith in 1841 by whom she had a son, Frederick S. Smith born 24th October 1842. Her marriage to John Griffiths on 12th December 1857 was a second marriage for her and a third marriage for him. They had three sons.
Problems
Apart from our uncertainty as to whether John had two wives or whether there were instead two Johns there are also other difficulties:
- There are two Maria Lane WINDEATTs recorded as marrying first in 1841 and
secondly in 1858. Can it be the same person? In England this
would be impossible as her name would have changed on the first
marriage. Are the Tasmanian records different?
[08/05/04] This problem has been solved by the information on the Griffiths website (see above). If it is correct - she is the same person and was Maria Jane WINDEATT not Maria Lane WINDEATT. - There are two Williams - one recorded as christened in 1811 and who cannot be John's son but could be his brother? But which William marrried Emma WATLIN?
- Where did the name MEYOR come from?

There is also a record of a Headstone of Ada WINDEATT. Died in 1912, aged 37yrs Source: Bagdad St Michaels Anglican. This must be the same person born c.1874.

- The Records marked Modbury above can be found here. With such common names, however, there is no guarantee that we have the right person.
- 1891 Census transcription for Tiverton - a strange entry - Emily Heaton WINGATE
The link above is no longer available - the data have been moved to FreeCen where you can search for her name - Tiverton, Devon, 1891 - a wife Emily Heaton WINGATE who was born in Hobart, Tasmania is now living in Tiverton in a boarding house with three children. I can't see any likely connection with the tree above and there may be no Devon connection at all. The children's birthplaces look as though her husband was in one of the armed services and they moved around a bit.
