Marldon Apple Pie

Bank Holiday Monday, August 1st 1960

This photo was taken at Marldon Apple Pie in 1960.  It shows a few of us sheltering under a large umbrella in the pouring rain. We were all staff  from the nearby Torbay Chalet Hotel  holiday camp (at that time owned by Mr. & Mrs. Spooner).    Below the photo is a transcription of my diary entry for the day.

Susan, Mike, Valerie, Sandra, Jean

I didn't want to go to this Apple Pie thing but as it was such a lovely sunny day I thought I would, even though I was dead tired.  Anyway, it was quite good fun - sort of stalls and stuff, and 6d for apple pie and 1/3 for cream!  Jean won a jar of gooseberries and Susan some almond essence.  The Fancy Dress Parade started off in the camp.  Anyway, suddenly the rain descended - and after I had put on something thinner for the occasion - and we all stood like nits under Tubby's umbrella.  There was Valerie, Mike, Susan, Jean and I.

Note:  'Tubby' was the camp comic and master of ceremonies.  At the start of the week Tubby welcomed the new campers with the words 'It has been raining non-stop for one whole week so it is bound to change now you have arrived' but it was such a terrible summer that each succeeding week he had to add another digit to the total..  And the weather never did change!
