William Hamlyn WINDEATT (1811-1850)
Shaldon Parish Baptisms Register: March 12 1811 William Hamlyn son of George & Susanna Windeat
William worked with his father as a builder in Shaldon and married on 20th September 1832 to Elizabeth WORTH in Shaldon and died aged only 39 years old on June 3rd 1850 in Ringmore, Shaldon. He was buried on June 6th.
He had several descendants but we know nothing of them. If you belong to this family please get in touch.
He worked with his father as a Mason and Builder in Shaldon but died young at about 40 years of age. He died in the June quarter of 1850 (GRO Reference: Newton Abbot 10 127). We don't yet have a copy of his death certificate to find out how he died. His wife didn't remarry but eventually moved north to live with one of her daughters and survived to the ripe old age of 99. Their daughter called her father an 'architect' on her mother's death certificate.

Spouse - Elizabeth WORTH (?1806-1905)
William Hamlyn WINDEATT married Elizabeth WORTH on 20th September 1832 in Shaldon by banns. Both of this parish, both signed. Witnesses: George Windeatt & Mary A Windeatt, both signed. George and Mary were probably Williams brother and sister.
We know little about her. Please get in touch if you know anything about Elizabeth's family.
We do know that she lived a long life - here's a transcription of her the 1881 census where she is 75 and living with her daughter Elizabeth in Chorlton cum Hardy.

Children
Information about the children has been pieced together from the census returns (see below).
1. Sally WINDEATT later THOMSON (1834-?)
Shaldon Parish Baptisms Register: Dec 21 1834 Sally North daughter of William Hamlyn & Elizabeth Windeatt, Shaldon, Mason
Sally, was William and Elizabeth's first daughter but where was she in the 1841 census? She isn't listed with her parents or her paternal grandparents? She first appears in the 1851 census living with her brother at the house of her uncle, John BEAL, in Tiverton and working as a pupil-teacher at the British School. Their father had died six months previously.
John BEAL's wife was also called Sarah. We don't yet know the precise nature of the relationship but I suspect she was her mother's older sister.
By 1881 she had married John THOMSON and was living at 31 Sutcliffe St, West Derby, Lancashire, England. West Derby is in Liverpool. She was 46 and had five children still living with her but there may have been older children who had already left home. Her younger brother, John Worth WINDEATT, was staying with them.
| Name | Relationship | Marital Status | Sex | Age | Birthplace | Occupation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SallyTHOMSON | Head | M | F | 46 | St. Nicholas, Devon | - |
| John THOMSON | Son | - | M | 13 | Walton, Lancashire | Office Lad Ship Broker |
| David THOMSON | Son | - | M | 12 | Walton, Lancashire | Office Lad General Ship Broker |
| Harry THOMSON | Son | - | M | 11 | Walton, Lancashire | Scholar |
| George THOMSON | Son | - | M | 5 | Walton, Lancashire | |
| Bessie THOMSON | Daur | - | F | 3 | Walton, Lancashire | |
| John WINDEATT | Brother | U | M | 40 | St. Nicholas, Devon | Master Mariner Unemployed |
So had her husband died? If so, the census return should have said 'Head', 'Wid'. If he was away that night, then it should have said 'Wife', 'Married'.
2. Elizabeth Worth WINDEATT (?1836-?)
Shaldon Parish Baptisms Register: June 4 1837 Elizabeth Worth daughter of William & Elizabeth Windeatt, Shaldon, Mason
Elizabeth because she appears first in the 1841 census aged 4 and then in the 1851 census aged 14
From the GRO index we know she married William Bradley ADAMS in West Derby in the December quarter of 1867.
Here she is in the 1881 census taken 3rd April), living in Chorlton cum Hardy with her husband. He appears to be unemployed and she is working as a domestic servant. She also has her mother living with her.

He may have married in Canada. According to the Canadian Archives website a John North WINDEOTT (almost certainly a mistranscription) married a Mary McLennan in 1884 in Saint-Stephen's Anglican Church (page 18v).
He died in New York, 10.1.1904. We don't know if he had any children.
4. William Hamlyn WINDEATT (2) (1842-1900), Master Mariner
He was born in the June quarter of 1842 (Newton Abbot) but baptised on Jan 1 1843 William Hamlyn son of William Hamlyn & Elizabeth Windeatt, Shaldon, Mason and died in Montreal Canada 30/10/1900 age 58.
Married 1874 (Newton Abbot) to Eliza Warren WHITEWAY ( she was baptised in Sept 1847 and died in 1937 - information from a correspondent).
We think they had at least four children:
- Mary Ellen born 1875 (Nelly
on the census lists),
Shaldon Parish Baptisms Register: March 8 1876 Nelly Seymour daughter of William Hamlyn & Eliza Warren Windeatt, St Nicholas, Master Mariner - William Hamlyn (3) born 1879
- Mary Worth born and died in 1884, and
- Amy Worth .
The children and their mother are staying with their grandma Miriam Whiteway in the 1881 and 1891 censuses - see below. William was obviously away at sea.
Little William Hamlyn, aged only 10 months below, was to die in 1916 aged 36 in the First World War.

Miriam must have died because John is now the head of the household and still with three sisters living with him. Eliza is now widowed and working in her brother's shop. Nellie has taken up employment in Cornwall as a governess (see below) and Amy is now called 'May'.

5. Frank WINDEATT (?1845-?)
b.1846 (Shaldon)
We know nothing more about Frank. Just that he appears in the 1851 census, aged 5.
I thought he might be 'Frederick Francis WINDEATT' who was born in the March quarter of 1844 in the Newton Abbot Registration District (GRO Reference: 10 168) but this can't be the case because Frederick Francis did not survive:
Shaldon Parish Burial Register: June 12 1844 Frederick Francis WINDEATT, Shaldon 3months
Census Transcriptions
1841 Census (taken 6th June 1841)
Here is William in the 1841 Census living a couple of doors down from his father in St. Nicholas village:

Where was his daughter Sarah? She should have appeared in this census aged 6.

William died in 1850 but here is his wife with three of the children in the 1851 census. They were living in the same street, Fore St., as William's father George who was still alive aged 69.

I cannot find Elizabeth or any of her children living in Shaldon in 1861. I assume one or more daughters had married and moved away and she had gone to live with one of them.
Meanwhile the BEALs are back in Shaldon living in the first house in the High Street
