 Walkhampton to Woolwich?

GUESSWORK Tree suggesting the Thomas and Agnes in Buckland Monachorum could be the same as the Thomas and Agnes in Marldon.

Warning:  This tree is pure guesswork based largely on fragmentary secondary sources and should be regarded as hypothetical only.  Such is the nature of data from before 1837 that we may never know if if there is any truth in the guess that the Thomas and Agnes who were having children in Buckland Monachorum, West Dartmoor  in the 1760s are the same Thomas and Agnes who were having children in Marldon, near the coast in 1773.

Legend:  BM=Buckland Monachorum; M=Marldon

        Link to page about James

Whose child is James?

James is living with Thomas and Grace in the 1861 census and on his marriage certificate he gives his father's name as William - a labourer. However he can't be the son of the William baptised in 1837 because he would have been only 10 when James was born!  A mystery.  Perhaps we have the wrong James?  or the wrong William?

Notes

  1. Background history:
There were Windgeats in the Buckland Monachorum/Walkhampton area from as early as 1486.  The first Thomas appears in 1625 as a part owner of shares in a Tin Mine just outside Walkhampton.  He may be the same Thomas who made a will in 1658.  Other Thomases appear in the records of these neighbouring parishes later in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries but we cannot be sure how any of them may be related.  See the Horrabridge Tree Introduction for further information.
  2. Evidence:
There is NO definite evidence that the Thomas and Agnes who fathered Rosamond and Elizabeth in Buckland Monachorum are the same Thomas and Agnes who had Mary, Agnes, Ann, Sarah and John later in Marldon, near Torquay.  This tree is just speculative based on the fact that (a) the family appear to disappear from the Buckland Monachorum after the birth of Elizabeth and that a Thomas and Agnes start having children in Marldon shortly afterwards.  Also, (b) a Rosamond and an Elizabeth marry in Marldon at about the right ages to be the same girls who were born in Buckland Monachorum.  And finally other possible family members of the Horrabridge tree branch moved from Dartmoor to the coast later or at about the same time.
However, this could all be coincidental.  Given the fragmentary nature of the records in the Horrabridge area it could well be that Thomas and Agnes moved no further than to the next parish.  Or they could have moved to Kingsbridge where WINGATE families with similar given names also appear.  Or perhaps the Thomas and Agnes in Marldon came there from Kingsbridge?  Or, given that there were WINDEATTs in the Torquay area from early times they could have always been in this area.
  3. Who is the Thomas at the top of the tree?
Possible identifications are a Thomas WINDYET who was baptised in Buckland Monachorum on 9/10/1739
and another Thomas WINDEATT 'of Torquay' who was buried on 24/2/1818 in St. Marychurch, aged 88 -
although that Thomas is more likely to have been the Thomas WINDED who made a will which was proved just a few days later)
Another identification is the Thomas WINGATE who married an Agnes FROUDE in Bigbury on 24.03.1761.  They could have had a child (perhaps a Thomas) shortly after their marriage and before arriving in Buckland M.  But why would they move from the Kingsbridge area to Dartmoor and back again?  It is perhaps more likely that the Thomas Wingate who married Agnes FROUDE came from the Kingsbridge family.  And he may or may not have been the same Thomas who later fathered the children in Marldon.  With no census data to help us we may never know.

Sources (need checking)

  1. Christenings and marriages from IGI data which has not been checked against the primary sources.
  2. Census data.  I can't find Thomas in the 1841 census but a correspondent has kindly found James and Mary for me (see transcription below).

1841 Census

Here is Mary (presumed née WINGATE) with husband and son (born when she was 49 according to the census data).  John doesn't have an occupation listed.  Perhaps an oversight on the part of the enumerator?

Name Relationship Age Sex Occupation Born in county? Possible DOB?
James MAYER Head 62 M Ag. Lab Y 1778
Mary MAYER Moth 67 F   Y
John MAYER Son 22 M
  Address: Coombe, St Marychurch  Devonshire

In the same dwelling , but listed as a different household, is an Sarah HANNAFORD, aged 65 (she is about the right age to be a sister of James but she may be unrelated) [Ref: HO 107/228/10, page 1]

Also In 1841 a Robert MEYRE, Sawyer, is living in St. Marychurch with an Elizabeth.  Their ages (rounded down to the nearest five years) are given as 25 and 20.  This is almost certainly Mary's other son, Robert because she was living with him ten years later, see below.

1851 Census

and here is what may be his mother, Mary, now living with a son, Robert, in Old Road, St. Mary Church

1861 Census

A William WINGEAT, age 23, is serving in the Royal Navy in the 1861 census and is the right age to be the William born to Thomas and Grace in 1837 above [secondary source - I haven't seen the original image].

Name Relationship Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace Possible DOB?
Thomas WINDIAT Head M 68 M Seaman Marldon-DEV 1793
Grace WINDIAT Wife M 54 F   Chawley-DEV 1807
James WINDIAT Grnson U 13 F Painter St. Mary Church-DEV 1847
Address: 26 Fore Street, St. Mary Church, Torquay, Devon.

Note:  There is a Robert MEYOR , labourer, aged 47 living next door at No. 25.  This must be the Robert who was widowed and living with his mother, Mary, ten  years earlier.  He is now married to a 35 year old wife, Elizabeth, and with four children under ten: Frederick, Henry James, Clara and Sofia.  If Thomas is the illegitimate son of the Mary who married a James MARE in Tormoham in 1803 then it is very likely that Thomas and Robert are stepbrothers as well as neighbours.
