Introduction
In 1851 a large number of the Devon WINDEATTs were still in their 'home'
location although a few had moved on within Devon e.g. the Horrabridge family
had moved on to Exeter and the coast (turquoise shading). Early emigrants
from Devon were the the Staverton tree who had already moved to London. A
few still remained in Devon (green shading) although William and Mary Ann were shortly
to emigrate to Canada. The census reveals that the 270 WINDEAT(T)/WINGET(T)/WINGATEs
in
Devon in 1851 were distributed as follows: Exeter 26, Dawlish
6, West Teignmouth & Shaldon: 27, Chudleigh
5, Mortonhampstead & North Bovey12, Widecombe
2, Denbury 1, Newton Abbot
& District 4,
Torquay & District 25, Totnes 12,
Buckfastleigh & Dean Prior 26, Kingsbridge 33,
Plymouth
55, Plympton (includes Ermington, Modbury &
Ughborough) 26, Tavistock 2, South Brent 1.
Large page - please be patient
This is a big file so please wait for it to download. It would be
faster if it were in plain text rather than in tables but I thought that the
clarity of the tables and the ease of colour coding the table rows made it worth
the wait. Please leave a message on the MESSAGE BOARD if you disagree.
Colour Coding, Trees and Strays
Where a record is believed to relate to a person on a particular tree (see
TREES page for a brief explanation of each tree) then the record is shaded as
follows and I will gradually be inserting links from that family's record to
further information on their tree page.

Uncoloured records are for those people where we are not sure of their
origin. Where we do have more information about the person or family I
shall be gradually linking to it on a STRAYS
page.

Exeter (26)
The true figure is probably 24 since George WINDEATT appears to have been recorded twice. So has his
father John WINDEATT who was visiting his son in Exeter
(he died there a couple of days later) but was also recorded at his home address
in West Teignmouth with his wife.

From Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser (Exeter,
England), Thursday, August 28, 1856; Issue 4716.
SOUTH DEVON, NEWS: ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO PICK POCKETS IN A RAILWAY CARRIAGE: A young man of
respectable appearance, named Henry CRUPP, ws brought up on Thursday at the Town
Hall, before the Rev. W. PALK, and charged with attempting to pick the pocket of
Mrs. WINDEATT, a fat nurse. Mr. FRYER appeared for the defendant. It
appeared that on the day previous the complainant took a ticket at the Dawlish
station for Starcross and she alleged that on getting into the carriage the
defendant pulled her dress and her pocket The defendant, who is
respectably connected, and fills a responsible post in a well-know London
establishment, said he could produce abundant evidence as to character.
The idea of his picking pockets was preposterous. The fact was - the lady
was very stout - she had a wet umbrella, and he merely pushed her from him , as
he did not with to catch the dripping. It being quite evident that Nurse
WINDEATT had made a slight mistake, the case was immediately dismissed.

I would not have found this record above in the census
without finding William WINGET's
will. It looks as thought this William might be a relation of the William
of the will. Is WILCOT a mistranscription of WINGET? Is William
really John WINGET the third brother?

TEIGNGRACE - Windeatt relations?
The DFHS marriages index has an Isaac COISH marrying a Susanna WINGEAT in
1798 in Ilsington. They must be the parents of the Isaac COYSH
below. But we don't know where Susanna WINGEAT originated.
I thought at one time that there might be a link with George and Susannah in
St. Nicholas, Shaldon because there is a Susanna COYSH (aged ?14) living with an Elizabeth COYSH (aged 52)
in the 1841 census and next door to George WINDEATT and his wife, Susannah, in
St. Nicholas, Shaldon. However, any connection remains no more than
a suspicion currently.

*FREEBMD gives Isaac Coysh's
marriage as taking place in the March quarter of 1843 but the only other Ann on
the same page (i.e. possible spouse) is an Ann DICKER. Given that there is
a George DICKER living with them as well, it looks like this Ann COYSH's maiden
name was DICKER
