WINDGEAT UK births 1837-1900

Introduction

The information below is from the GRO Civil Registration Index and Registers and is reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO.  It is published here free of charge, for recreational research purposes only and is over 100 years old.  You may not copy on, transfer or reproduce these records without prior permission from the ONS.  It  has been compiled from 

1. The efforts of two different researchers in transcribing the WINDEATT births from the Family Records Centre index.
2. Transcriptions of Birth Certificates purchased by family members researching their own trees.
3. Suppositions based on other sources, e.g. Census data, monumental inscriptions and death certificates.

It does not pretend to be complete because

• There are more WINDEATT records than other variants.  This has arisen as a result of the compilers' original interests.  But we would like to collect more WINGETTs and WINGATEs.  Also I have not entered all the available data.  More will be added eventually.
• The Index itself is far from complete see the Review from the  June 2001 issue of  Family Tree magazine.
• Birth registration, while compulsory from 1837, was not enforced  until 1875 so families did always register their children.

There are probably quite a few mistakes of my own.  Please let me know if you find any!  And if you can fill in any of the gaps, I would be very grateful.

Colour Coding, Trees and Strays

Where a record is believed to relate to a person on a particular tree (see TREES page for a brief explanation of each tree) then the record is shaded as follows and I will gradually be inserting links from that family's record to further information on their tree page.

Uncoloured records are for those people where we are not sure of their origin.  Where we do have more information about the person or family I shall be gradually linking to it on to a STRAYS page.

15. My copy certificate says 1863 but this must be a transcription error -on the part of the registrar - I ought to check it out with them some time . . .

22. Information from a fellow-researcher.
23. We think this Robert is the son of Harriet Gates WINGETT, ch 05.10.1828 (Churston Ferrers), and who died in 1867.  If so, she may have called her son Robert after her brother Robert who was a year or two older than her.  We also think that this Robert may be the one who became a fisherman and settled in Grimsby founding the branch there.  The evidence so far, though, is circumstancial.
